Charles J. Pagnam

Pagnam steps down as V.P. for Development

Vice President for Development Charles J. Pagnam announced that he is leaving Yale after a 27-year career to pursue other challenges.

Since he became vice president in 1997, Yale has secured unprecedented levels of giving from its alumni, and was recently rated first in alumni giving by the Chronicle of Higher Education. During his tenure, overall annual contributions have risen from $203 million to $350 million.

Pagnam was also a key architect of the Yale capital campaign in the 1990s that raised $1.7 billion, which was the largest campaign in the history of higher education to that date.

"I leave with a great feeling of pride for what we have been able to accomplish and with the knowledge that the Office is well positioned to achieve record breaking results in the upcoming years." Pagnam said. "I have many fond memories of my time at Yale. The University has been very supportive of my family and me and I will be forever grateful to President (Richard C.) Levin for giving me the opportunity to lead the Development Office."

President Richard C. Levin said in a message to the Yale community: "Charlie has been a consummate professional who has given his all in the service of Yale. As vice president, he has helped Yale sustain its position as the U.S. university best supported by alumni giving. He has also been a consistently valuable contributor to the work of the officer team."

Yale is in the initial stages of a new capital campaign, and Levin said that Pagnam had agreed to serve as Special Adviser to the President for Campaign Planning while he finalizes his career plans.

Pagnam said the decision to choose between committing to a multi-year campaign for Yale and seeking a new challenge was a difficult one.

"I have been blessed to be surrounded with many talented individuals who have shared my vision and desire to create a highly professional development office that best represents the University," he said. "I have also been in the envious position of having worked with what I believe is the most loyal and generous alumni body in the world."

Prior to being named vice president, Pagnam was director of development with responsibility for Individual Capital Gifts, the Yale Alumni Fund, and Corporate and Foundation Relations.

During his Yale tenure, he managed the successful Fund for Engineering campaign in the mid-1980s and had regional responsibilities for relationships with major donors in Texas and the South/Southwestern states. His work on behalf of Yale Athletics resulted in significant improvements to facilities including the renovations of the DeWitt Cuyler Complex and Coxe Cage. He also raised considerable funds for the Yale Athletics endowment.

Levin announced that Joan O'Neill, associate vice president for development, would assume the role of acting vice president while a search for Pagnam's successor is conducted.
