Reception for donors will feature
prizes, departmental awards

As the 2004 United Way Campaign at Yale enters its sixth week, the goal mark and the drive's conclusion draws near.

To date, the campaign has raised over $610,000, which exceeds the $566,000 that was raised last year. It also brings Yale that much closer to its goal of $1 million, says Judith Hackman, chair of this year's campaign, adding that it will take the caring spirit of many to achieve this goal.

"We are well on our way to raising the million dollars that we have set as our goal for this community, but we will need increased participation and the help of caring people all over this University to do that," she says.

Hackman noted that there is already wide support from Locals 34 and 35, the faculty emeriti, undergraduate and graduate students, and the officers of the University, who have offered a challenge match of $100,000 (to all new and increased dollars in the campaign) -- all of which will go towards Success by 6, a new initiative for early childhood learning in the New Haven region. This match has been increased to $175,000 by an anonymous donor.

As an added incentive, all those who make an individual contribution to the campaign are invited to attend a reception being held on Monday, Nov. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. in University Commons, corner of College and Grove streets.

Approximately 20 prizes will be awarded at the event, such as a weekend for two to New York City or Boston, or a dinner for two at La Piazza. In addition, 10 departments (five each from the Central and Medical campuses) will receive prizes for highest participation rate, the highest average pledge, the largest increase in rate and pledge, and the most creative campaign. The list of departmental prizes (which can be found at www.sb6.yale.edu/drawings.html) includes:

* A catered departmental party at Betts House with wine and hors d'oeuvres.

* A departmental reception at the Yale College Dean's house.

* A departmental reception with John Pepper, vice president for finance and administration, in the Presidents Room of Woolsey Hall.

* Departmental continental breakfast with food from the Yale Sustainable Food Project, Yale Dining Services.

* Department guided tour of Peabody Museum galleries.

* Lunch catered by Claire's Corner Copia.

* A 20% discount at Yale Bookstore-Barnes & Noble for a week to faculty & staff of winning departments on campus.

Yale College Dean Peter Salovey will emcee the Nov. 22 reception, and others who played a significant role in this year's campaign will also speak.

Hackman urges those who have not yet turned in their pledge to visit www.yale.edu/unitedway and help Yale reach its goal.

She adds: "By giving to this year's campaign for United Way of Greater New Haven, we are making an investment in this community and improving lives."
