New database has info on all grants at Yale

The University has launched a searchable database of all Yale-funded and administered fellowships for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students.

The Yale University Grants and Fellowship Database offers the first centralized course of information about the hundreds of funding opportunities currently spread throughout University departments and schools. While most of the fellowships are for international study, travel and research, many are for domestic or non-specific opportunities (e.g. the Truman, Udall, and Goldwater scholarships for undergraduates).

The database project was developed over the past year through a collaboration between Yale College's Office of International Education and Fellowship Programs (IEFP), the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS), the Graduate School, the Law School and the Office of International Affairs. It was formally launched on Nov. 8 at http://studentgrants.yale.edu/.

Barbara Rowe, assistant dean of Yale College and director of IEFP, says: "Since it is a searchable database, all students will have access to all opportunities for which they are eligible. Moreover, the database will provide a 'back office' function for record keeping and for report generation for each funding unit. Among other benefits, this will enable funding units to identify students who have applied for multiple grants, and allow the units to make more equitable distribution of funds. It also will enable Yale to identify immediately those students who are in, or planning to travel to, trouble spots."

Richard Kane, associate director of YCIAS, adds: "We know of no comparable database among other universities. The students who beta-tested the database this fall gave it rave reviews, but we expect that it will require improvements as all the functions come on line."

The database is funded in large part through the generosity of Thomas C. Barry, Yale College Class of 1966.
