A Winter Arts Festival showcasing ,the collective and individual creativity of the Yale community will take place Friday-Sunday, Jan. 21-23.
The event, which was organized by the Yale Student Activities Committee, is loosely organized around the theme "Reflections."
"The purpose of the festival is to produce a unique event for the Yale and New Haven community that shows off the immense talent Yale has to offer from undergraduates to professional school students to alumni and faculty," says Orly Friedman '07, chair of the festival.
"People are doing so many amazing things every weekend of the year, but one never experiences the full force of artistic brilliance Yale has to offer," she adds.
While many of the festival events are free and open to the public, there are fees for some activities such as the Kick-off Show -- the proceeds of which will be donated to Disaster Relief-Sri Lanka (see related story). A pass to all of the for-fee events is $8; tickets to the individual events are listed below. The names of those who buy a pass and attend five events will be entered into a raffle for various prizes. Passes can be purchased in the rotunda outside of Yale Commons Jan. 17-21, or via e-mail at winterfestival@yalestation.org.
The schedule of events for the Winter Arts Festival follows:
8-10 p.m. -- Kick-off Show. An array of comedy, dance and a capella groups will perform, including Steppin Out, Just Add Water, Duke's Men, Yaledancers, Proof of the Pudding, Rhythmic Blue and Tangled Up in Blue. Tickets: $6. Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.
2-4 p.m. -- Student Art Exhibitions. Photographic works will be on view in Maya's Room of Silliman College, 505 College St.; and cartoon creations will be displayed in the education room of the Yale University Art Gallery, corner of Chapel and High streets. Free admission.
2-3:30 p.m. -- Acting Master Class. Undergraduate actors will read three monologues, which will then be critiqued by School of Drama Dean James Bundy. Free admission. Sudler Hall of William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St.
4-5:30 p.m. -- Music Recital. Original student opera, jazz and contemporary musical theater compositions will be featured. Free admission. Sudler Hall.
4-6 p.m. -- Open mic and Happy Hour. Organized by the Yale Literary Magazine. Bottega Caffe, 956 Chapel St.
11 a.m.-2 p.m. -- Student Film Festival. Films, shorts and documentaries produced by Bulldog Productions and YTV will be screened. Tickets: $2. York Square Cinemas, 61 Broadway.
2-5 p.m. -- Student Film Festival. Films, shorts and documentaries produced by Bulldog Productions and YTV will be screened. Tickets: $2. Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St.
3-4:30 p.m. -- Architecture Panel and Exhibition. Architecture School Dean Robert A.M. Stern will lead a group of colleagues in a discussion about the future of sustainable and green architecture. Free admission. Rm. 101, Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.
4:30-5:30 p.m. -- Fashion Show. Clothing produced, designed and modeled by students will be featured. Organized by YCouture. Tickets: $3. Fellows Lounge, Silliman College.
