Dr. Michael H. Merson, the Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health, has announced that he will step down as dean of public health and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), effective Dec. 31.
Merson came to Yale in 1995 from the World Health Organization, where he led its Global Programme on AIDS, which operates in over 120 countries.
"Dr. Merson has done an extraordinary job leading EPH," said School of Medicine Dean Dr. Robert Alpern. "I and the school are indebted to him for 10 years of visionary leadership and exemplary service at EPH.
"He raised the profile of the department, enhanced the school's research and educational activities and recruited stellar faculty and student body," added Alpern. "He has shepherded numerous initiatives linking EPH with the rest of the University and Yale College, including joint degree programs with the Schools of Nursing, Management, Law, Forestry & Environmental Studies and Divinity."
Merson helped create the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS, which is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and undertakes research on HIV primary and secondary prevention in vulnerable and underserved populations in the United States, as well as in Russia, China, India and South Africa. He has also directed international training programs with collaborating institutions in these countries supported by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Fogarty International Center.
Merson currently serves in advisory capacities for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global HIV Prevention Working Group, the United Nation's Millennium Project's Task Force on HIV/AIDS and the World Bank. He has served on several NIH review panels and advisory committees.
His many honors include election to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and membership on the IOM's Board on Global Health.
After a sabbatical, Merson will return to the EPH faculty to continue his academic and scholarly activities.
