Martin Jean

Organist Martin Jean appointed new ISM director

President Richard C. Levin has announced that the new director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) is Martin Jean, professor of organ at ISM and the School of Music.

Jean succeeds Margot E. Fassler, who last spring announced her intention to return to the faculty to devote herself full time to teaching and scholarship after serving two terms as director of ISM. His five-year appointment was effective Jan. 1.

As a concert artist, Jean has performed widely throughout the United States and Europe and is known for his broad repertorial interests. He has won two of the most prestigious music prizes in the world: He was awarded first place at both the International Grand Prix de Chartres in 1986 and at the 1992 National Young Artists' Competition in Organ Performance.

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan where he was a student of Robert Glasgow. In the fall of 1999 he spent a sabbatical with Harald Vogel in North Germany.

In 2001, Jean concluded a cycle of the complete organ works of Bach at Yale. Gothic Recordings recently released a compact disc of Jean's performance of the complete "Six Symphonies of Louis Vierne" and will soon release the organist's "The Seven Last Words of Christ" by Charles Tournemire. Both compact discs were recorded in Woolsey Hall. Jean has also recorded for the Raven and Prestant labels.

"Professor Jean is a distinguished organist, and since arriving at Yale in 1997, he has made major contributions to the institute," said Levin in his announcement. "I am most grateful to him for taking on this important responsibility."

Levin added that he wanted to thank Margot Fassler "for the extraordinary job she has done as director of ISM for over 10 years. She has recruited outstanding faculty, created exciting new programs, and strengthened the institute's ties to many other parts of the University."
