Jacob K. Thomas, who was named the Williams Brothers Professor of Accounting and Finance at the Yale School of Management (SOM), has focused his research and teaching on valuation issues -- in particular, the relations among accounting information, current stock prices and future returns.
Thomas' research has investigated questions in accounting, tax and corporate finance relating to options, pensions, leases, quality of accounting disclosures and cost allocation. His recent work in the area of valuation has included ways of estimating the equity risk premium, the use of multiples for valuation and building trading rules using accounting information.
His research has been published in the top accounting and finance journals and honored with numerous research awards and grants, including first prize in the Institutional Broker Estimate Survey's Competition for International Valuation Research, the Chazen International Research Prize, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Notable Contributions to Accounting Literature Award.
Thomas is also an award-winning teacher who has developed and delivered a variety of M.B.A., Ph.D. and executive education courses in accounting and finance
He joined the SOM faculty in 2003, and currently teaches financial reporting and financial statement analysis in the M.B.A. program. He also has taught the Executive Program "Finance for Non-Financial Managers."
Before coming to Yale, Thomas served for 15 years on the faculty at Columbia University, where he was the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting and Finance and former chair of the Accounting Division. His prior experience includes teaching at the University of Rochester (1984-1988), advising clients as a consultant with Ernst and Whinney in Tehran (1977-1979), and designing process plants with Engineers (India) Limited in New Delhi (1974-1976).
He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1984), an M.B.A. with distinction from the Iran Center for Management Studies in Tehran (1977) in association with the Harvard Business School, and a B.Tech. with distinction from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi (1974).
Thomas has held editorial appointments at several academic journals including The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting, Economics, Accounting Horizons, Auditing, and Finance, The Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, and Contemporary Accounting Research.
He is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Finance Association, American Economics Association and the Institute of Management Accounting.
