Tim W. Clark

Clark designated Cullman Adjunct Professor

Tim W. Clark, newly designated as the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Adjunct Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Policy at the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES), has dedicated his research and teaching to improving the conservation of species and ecosystems at the professional, scientific, organizational and policy levels.

Clark has conducted field ecological and behavioral research on 35 mammals and other species. An expert in natural resource policy and management, he has conducted research and applied projects to develop ecosystem management policy in the greater yellowstone ecosystem and to evaluate endangered species policy in Australia (most recently for koalas). He is currently researching conservation policy in Central America.

His work involves building case studies; evaluating policies and programs; helping organizations to incorporate reliable science into management; helping students develop proficiency in the policy sciences method of research and problem solving; and working with a wide range of groups to improve conservation problem solving through workshops and other analytic exercises.

He has written over 350 papers, many on interdisciplinary problem solving. His recent books include "Averting Extinction: Reconstructing Endangered Species Recovery," "Carnivores in Ecosystems: The Yellowstone Experience" (co-edited with A.P. Curlee, S.C. Minta and P. Kareiva), and "Foundations of Natural Resources Policy and Management" (co-edited with A.R. Willard and C.M. Crowley).

He holds a B.S. in biology from Northeastern Oklahoma State College (1964), an M.S. from the University of Wyoming and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Wisconsin (1969 and 1973). He has taught at the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin and at Montana and Idaho state universities, and he was director of the Yellowstone Institute, the national park's educational subsidiary. He has also held research posts at the New York and Chicago zoological societies. He is the former president and co-founder of Biota Research and Consulting Inc. and is currently president and founder of the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative.

He came to Yale in 1989 as a member of the adjunct faculty at F&ES, and also has an appointment at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies.

He has received various awards, including the Outstanding Contribution Award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Presidential Award from the Chicago Zoological Society, and Best Teacher from the students at F&ES. He is also a member of three species survival commissions of the IUCN-World Conservation Union.
