Classics traveling fellowships

The Department of Classics is accepting applications for Berkeley, Biddle and Woolsey traveling fellowships from graduate students in classics and undergraduate majors in classics or archaeology.

The purpose of the fellowships is to enable students of classical antiquity to view the monuments, topography and landscape of the ancient world. They are not specifically designed for archaeology projects or research travel, although a program of study or research often makes an application more compelling.

The fellowships are made possible through the Berkeley, Biddle and Woolsey Scholarship Funds. Awards have not exceeded $1,500 in the past, but the amount depends on the annual income from the prize funds underwriting the awards and the number of applicants. The award is intended for use this summer, and winners will be required to submit receipts for major expenses.

Applications should consist of a short statement of the proposed plan of travel and a budget, together with a brief signed statement of support from a faculty member. Applications must be submitted by noon on Monday, April 4, to Victor Bers, director of graduate studies, Department of Classics, 404 Phelps Hall, 344 College St. Applicants should submit their full legal name, college, year of graduation, nationality, gender, social security number and e-mail address at the time of application.

Multifaith service day

The Chaplain's Office and the Multifaith Council are sponsoring a multifaith service day for students of all or no religious traditions who will work throughout New Haven on Friday, April 8, 12:30-5 p.m.

Participants will gather at 12:30 p.m. for conversation, then leave to be at worksites by 1 p.m. After working for the afternoon, individuals will return by 5 p.m. for a shabbat dinner at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St.

For more information, send e-mail to callista.brown@yale.edu or cynthia.terry@yale.edu.

Porter and Field prizes

The Office of the Secretary is accepting applications for two university-wide prizes: the Porter Prize and the Field Prize.

Competition for these prizes is open to all students enrolled at the University for a degree.

The John Addison Porter Prize is awarded for a work of scholarship in any field in which it is possible, through original effort, to gather and relate facts and/or principles and to make the product of general human interest. The Kingsley Trust Association (The Scroll and Key Society) established the award in 1872 in honor of the late professor Porter, who received a bachelor's degree from Yale in 1842.

The Theron Rockwell Field Prize, established in 1957 by Emilia R. Field in memory of her husband, an 1889S graduate of Yale, is awarded for a "poetic, literary or religious work" of scholarship.

Entries must be submitted before 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, to Barbara Mordecai, Office of the Secretary, 393 Prospect St., Suite 010. For more information, call (203) 432-2311 or visit the website at www.yale.edu/secretary/prizes.

Open House

The next Open House, an informal forum for talking with University leaders, will be held on Monday, March 7, at the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St., from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Andrew Hamilton, provost, and John Pepper, vice president for finance and administration, will speak and take questions.

These sessions are open to everyone in the University community. To register, visit the website at http://learn.caim.yale.edu/lcdb/courses/classinfo.asp?CourseID=786.

YUWO scholarships

The Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO) is offering scholarship awards to women whose formal education has been interrupted or delayed and who wish to resume their studies, or enhance or change their careers.

Members of the Yale community and their family members are eligible for the awards. YUWO members and family are not eligible. Present staff members and wives of staff members will be given first consideration. Applicants are judged upon merit and need.

Applications for the 2005-2006 academic year may be obtained by writing to Michaela Hauser-Wagner, 35 Hidden Place, Cheshire, CT 06410. Applicants should state their Yale affiliation and enclose a self-addressed, stamped business-sized envelope. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 1. For more information, call Hauser-Wagner at (203) 271-1842.

Investment counseling

Representatives from TIAA-CREF will be on campus through June to meet with faculty and staff about investment options for retirement.

Individuals will have the opportunity to have one-on-one sessions with a representative. Topics may include enrollment in 403(b) retirement programs, retirement fund allocations within the program and withdrawal options upon retirement or separation of service.

To schedule an appointment, call (203) 281-2400.

Bibliophiles' tour of Britain

The Yale Library Associates will sponsor a bibliophiles' tour of Britain in June.

The tour will consist of visits to private and public libraries as well as antiquarian booksellers. Opportunities for shopping and sightseeing will also be accommodated.

Among the locations to be visited will be the Royal Library at Windsor, the National Library of Scotland and the House of Lords Archives. The tour will begin in Edinburgh on June 1 and conclude in London on June 9.

The cost of the tour is $2,500, in addition to a $250 contribution to Yale Library Associates. Hotel accommodation, some meals, and travel within Britain is included in the cost. Travel to and from Britain is not included.

For more information, contact Rebecca Martz at (203) 432-2969.
