Christianna Nelson appears in the title role of "Hedda Gabler," which will be presented March 26-April 2 by the School of Drama.

School of Drama will present
Ibsen's tragedy 'Hedda Gabler'

An angst-ridden young heroine strains against the bonds of bourgeois life in Henrik Ibsen's renowned tragedy "Hedda Gabler," the next offering in the School of Drama's 2004-2005 season.

The play, the thesis production of director Christopher Carter Sanderson, will be performed March 26-April 2 at the University Theatre, 222 York St. Opening Night is Wednesday, April 30.

The heroine of the play is Hedda Tesman, daughter of the late General Gabler and a newlywed who is already dissatisfied with married life. The story begins when Hedda and her husband, Jørgen, return from their honeymoon and learn that Jørgen must compete for the chair of his department against one of Hedda's former admirers. In the course of two days, Hedda engineers a series of dramatic -- and ultimately self-defeating -- events.

The cast includes Jeff Barry (George Tesman), Lisa Birnbaum (Berta), Emily Dorsch (Miss Julie Tesman), Jacob Knoll (Judge Brack), Stephen Conrad Moore (Eilert Lovborg), Christianna Nelson (Hedda Gabler) and Tiffany Rachelle Stewart (Mrs. Tea Elvsted).

"Hedda Gabler" features scenic design by Zane Pihlstrom, costume design by Mike Floyd, lighting design by Thom Weaver and sound design by Andrew Nagel. Kristina Mendicino is the dramaturg, and Shawn Senavinin is the stage manager.

Sanderson is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at the School of Drama, where he has directed the new plays "Bridesburg" and "The Special Interest Case of Special Agent Esteban Martinez," both by Victor Kaufold, and "..., said Said" by Kenneth Lin. Sanderson founded New York's Gorilla Repertory Theater Company in 1992 and is the author of "Gorilla Theatre" (Routledge 2003). He has directed over 60 productions in New York, including 10 seasons of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in Washington Square Park. He has held adjunct appointments at Yale College, Princeton University and the University of New Haven and is an associate member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Sanderson holds a B.F.A. from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Experimental Theater Wing.

"Hedda Gabler" will be performed at 8 p.m. on March 26 and March 29-April 1, and at 2 p.m. on April 2. Individual ticket prices range from $15 to $18. Student tickets are priced from $12 to $14.50. Discounted rates for seniors and groups are also available. Tickets may be purchased by calling (203) 432-1234 or stopping by the Yale Repertory Theatre box office at 1120 Chapel St.
