Yale editor Nayan Chanda earns
Shorenstein Award for Journalism

Nayan Chanda, editor of YaleGlobal Online, has won the 2005 Shorenstein Award for Journalism.

Chanda, who is also the director of publications for the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, received the award in a ceremony at the Shorenstein Center of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

The Shorenstein Award honors a journalist not only for a distinguished body of work, but also for the particular way the work has helped an American audience understand the complexities of Asia. The biennial award is presented jointly by the Walter H. Shorenstein Forum for Asia Pacific Studies at Stanford University and the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard. Alex Jones, director of the Shorenstein Center, presided over the ceremony at Harvard, where Chanda also presented a lecture titled "Asia: Caught in the Web of Nationalism."

Chanda was the editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review from 1996 to 2000 and was a correspondent for that magazine for another 22 years prior to becoming its editor. He is the co-author of over a dozen books on Asian politics, security and foreign policy issues. His best-known book, "Brother Enemy: The War after the War," is an authoritative chronicle of what happened after South Vietnam and Cambodia fell to the Communists in 1975. Most recently he co-edited with Strobe Talbott a collection of essays titled "The Age of Terror: America and the World after September 11."

In a tribute to Chanda, Dan Okimoto, director of the Shorenstein Forum, and Donald Emmerson, director of the Southeast Asia Program at the Asia Pacific Research Center at Stanford, noted: "Anyone who read the Far Eastern Economic Review when he was writing for it or editing it, or who has read his magisterial book on Indochina, 'Brother Enemy,' or who has read the pieces he now edits for YaleGlobal, the online magazine, has been simultaneously informed, stimulated and struck by the intelligence and insight of Nayan Chanda."

YaleGlobal Online is the flagship publication of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. Its aim is to analyze and promote debate on all aspects of globalization through publishing original articles and multi-media presentations. The site is free and available to the public at large at http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/.
