'Simply Ming!' chef will give campus talk

Chef Ming Tsai, host of "Simply Ming!" on PBS, will present a talk titled "Food: A Bridge Between Two Cultures" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Saybrook College dining hall, 242 Elm St.

The talk by Ming Tsai, a 1986 Yale College graduate, will be the keynote address at the Asian American Heritage Month Dinner, which begins at 5:30 p.m. It is also the final talk in a year-long series honoring Yung Wing, who became the first Chinese citizen to graduate from any Western university when he earned his degree from Yale 150 years ago.

While the 7 p.m. talk by Ming Tsai is free and open to the public, tickets are required for the dinner. Ming Tsai learned to cook at his parent's restaurant, Mandarin Kitchen. While studying for a degree in mechanical engineering at Yale, he continued to maintain an interest in cooking, and spent the summer of his sophomore year at Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris. Upon graduation, he decided to make food his focus and studied with master chefs around the globe, eventually earning a master's degree in hotel administration and hospitality marketing at Cornell University.

After working at establishments throughout the country, in 1998 Ming Tsai and his wife, Polly, opened Blue Ginger, a bistro-style restaurant in Boston that is dedicated to East-West cuisine. Both the restaurant and Ming Tsai earned numerous accolades, including being named "Best New Restaurant" and "2002 Best Chef Northeast" by the James Beard Foundation.

The chef was subsequently approached by the retailer Target and launched the Blue Ginger line of cookware, Asian-inspired ingredients and snack foods.

Ming Tsai began cooking for television audiences on the Food Network, where he was the 1998 Emmy Award-winning host of "East Meets West, Cooking with Ming Tsai" and "Ming's Quest." In 2005, "Simply Ming!" was awarded the CINE Golden Eagle Award. Today, he is also one of three celebrity judges on a new "reality" show on PBS titled "Cooking Under Fire," which debuts this month. He is the author of three cookbooks: "Blue Ginger: East Meets West Cooking with Ming Tsai," now in its 8th edition; "Simply Ming," featuring recipes from his show; and "Ming's Master Recipes," a companion book to the second season of "Simply Ming!"
