A fashion show of cultural dress will be among the activities at the combined Communiversity Day and International Cultural Festival celebration.

Festival offers family fun and cultural activities

The ties between and diversity of the Yale and New Haven communities will once again be celebrated by the University during a day-long event that combines the annual Communiversity Day activities and an International Cultural Festival.

Featuring educational activities, entertainment and refreshments, the joint celebration is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, on the Old Campus (bordered by Chapel, High, Elm and College streets).

Communiversity Day

"Free Family Fun for Everyone" is the theme of this year's Communiversity Day, the annual salute to the links between the campus and the city.

As in previous years, the day will include a range of activities for individuals of all ages. Youngsters can compete at a talent show at 1 p.m.; enjoy the games and rides at the Kids' Carnival (which will again feature a giant inflatable slide and Moon Bounce); or pick up a free book from the Book Bank, part of the Community Action Bazaar. Adults visiting the bazaar can get a blood pressure screening and participate in interactive exhibits by over 25 Yale student groups and New Haven agencies involved in public service -- from the Red Cross to homeless shelters to All Our Kin, a welfare-to-work program, among others.

In addition, visitors will also have the opportunity to stargaze in a planetarium that will be set up inside Dwight Hall Chapel. This activity is sponsored by DEMOS, a Yale undergraduate organization that presents science education programs in New Haven schools.

Entertainment will be provided by Yale and local groups (co-sponsored by the International Cultural Festival). In keeping with a Communiversity Day tradition, free hotdogs and hamburgers will be available throughout the day.

Communiversity Day is coordinated by Alpha Phi Omega, the University's co-ed community service fraternity, and is sponsored by Dwight Hall and the University's Office of New Haven and State Affairs, among others.

International Cultural Festival

Performances of dance and music from around the globe, an exhibition of international photographs and a fashion show of traditional national dress are among the highlights of the International Cultural Festival, which celebrates the diverse peoples who comprise the campus and city communities.

Now in its third year, the festival will also feature informative and entertaining exhibitions about various world cultures presented by student groups. Visitors to the festival will be given "passports" that they can get stamped as they "travel" among the exhibitions. After visiting the various booths, they can then enter a free drawing with prizes donated from such places as Stone Boat Farm Bed & Breakfast, Caffe Adulis/La Piazza, Claire's Corner Copia, Zaroka, STA Travel and more.

The photo exhibition will feature contributions from Yale's international students and scholars and from students who have studied abroad. Some of these photographs will be selected as winners in the festival's photo contest.

The Office of International Students and Scholars is the main sponsor and coordinator of the festival. Each year, Yale and New Haven welcome more than 3,000 international scholars, students and staff members from over 100 countries. Co-sponsors include the Asian American Cultural Center, the McDougal Center, the Yale Center for International and Area Studies and the Office of the Secretary.
