Bruce Carmichael

Bruce Carmichael is appointed
an assistant provost

Bruce Carmichael, a member of the Yale staff for 15 years, has been appointed assistant provost for science and technology, Deputy Provost for Science and Technology Andrew Hamilton has announced.

Carmichael has served since May 2003 as interim assistant provost for science and technology and was previously associate dean of resources and management at the School of Nursing (YSN). His new post is for a three-year term.

"All of us in the Provost's Office are delighted that Bruce has agreed to drop the 'interim' in his title and take on a term as assistant provost," says Hamilton. "He brings a wealth of experience and outstanding judgment to the task and will be critical in moving forward the ambitious plans we all have for science at Yale."

In his post as associate dean at YSN, Carmichael's responsibilities included business services, financial aid, student affairs, information technology, public information and development. In addition, he led a planning process that resulted in a five-year strategic plan for the school.

Prior to YSN, Carmichael served as executive director of major projects and facilities at the School of Medicine, where, among other assignments, he led the staff and consultant team for The Anlyan Research Center on Cedar Street through the planning and design phases. He has taught introductory anatomy and physiology seminars, graduate business strategy courses, and lectured on organizational behavior and change.

A 1982 graduate of YSN, Carmichael also holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of New Haven. He has served Yale on many committees, including those concerned with the University budget, biological safety, labor negotiation, capital projects renewal and business services. Prior to being at Yale, he held positions at Yale-New Haven Hospital and in the private sector.
