Keith DeRose

Philosopher Keith DeRose named
to Allison Foundation Chair

Keith DeRose, newly named as the Allison Foundation Professor of Philosophy, has focused his research on epistemology (the study of knowledge), the philosophy of language, the history of modern philosophy, metaphysics and the philosophy of religion.

He is particularly interested in the subject of skepticism, as well as in epistemological language and conditionals, the problem of evil and religious epistemology, and the philosophers Descartes, Hume, Berkeley and Reid. He has written numerous articles and papers for publications on these and other topics, including such philosophical explorations as "How Can We Know That We're Not Brains in Vats?" and "Can It Be That It Would Have Been Even Though It Might Not Have Been?"

A member of the Yale faculty since 1998, DeRose previously taught in the philosophy departments at New York University (1990-1993) and Rice University (1993-1998). He holds a B.A. from Calvin College and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was awarded the Robert M. Yost Prize for Excellence in Teaching as a doctoral student.

Among the courses DeRose has taught at Yale are "Free Will, Good and Evil," "Modern Philosophy, Descartes to Kant," "Critical Reasoning" and a seminar on "Perceiving God." He has been a frequent speaker and commentator at conferences and symposia at universities throughout the United States.

DeRose is a member of the Society of Christian Philosophers and the American Philosophical Association, among other professional organizations.
