Phyllis Granoff appointed to Hixon Chair in World Religions
Phyllis Granoff, newly appointed as the Lex Hixon Professor of World Religions, is a scholar of the classical religions of India (Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism), who has also studied Indian mythology, cults, image worship, art, literature and poetry, and medieval Indian law codes.
With Yale colleague Koichi Shinohara, she has written or edited several books: "Monks and Magicians, Religious Biography in Asia," "Speaking of Monks: Religious Biography in Asia," "Other Selves: Autobiography and Biography in Cross-cultural Perspective" and "Pilgrims, Patrons and Place: Localizing Sanctity in Asian Religions."
Her other books (written or edited) include "Philosophy and Argument in Late Vedanta: Sri Harsa's Khandanalhandakhadya," "Strange Attachment: Short Stories of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay," "The Clever Adulteress: A Treasury of Jain Stories," "The Forest of Thieves and the Magic Garden: An Anthology of Medieval Jain Stories," "The Journey: Stories by K.C. Das" and "Inner Voices: Stories of Kishor Charan Das."
Granoff, who speaks Sanskrit, Pali, Ardha Magadhi, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya and Hindi, as well as several other languages, has translated many of the stories in her books.
Granoff holds a B.A. from Radcliffe College and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. She taught at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, from 1976 until joining the Yale faculty in 2004. She is an editor of the Journal of Indian Philosophy and is a member of the Bhandarkar Oriental Institute, the Association for Asian Studies and the American Academy of Religion.
