Provost Andrew D. Hamilton has announced that three assistant provosts have been promoted to associate provost posts, effective July 1. Emily P. Bakemeier, as associate provost, will now have primary responsibility for the foreign language and literature departments; the Departments of Sociology, Comparative Literature and History of Art; the Special Programs in the Humanities; and the Programs in Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, Film Studies, Theater Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. In addition, Bakemeier will oversee the Whitney Humanities Center, the Center for Writing Instruction, and the Center for Language Study. She will also continue to work closely with the School of Law in support of faculty recruiting and related administrative matters. Finally, she will oversee the Social Science Research Fund and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Appointments Office. Bruce F. Carmichael, as associate provost for science and technology, will work closely with Kim Bottomly, deputy provost for science, technology and faculty development, on all issues concerning the FAS science departments and the Departments of Linguistics, Psychology, Statistics and Anthropology, as well as the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and the Peabody Museum. In addition, Carmichael will now have primary responsibility for issues involving the general administration, facilities, non-ladder teaching and equipment needs of these schools and departments. He also will have primary oversight within the Provost's Office for the Advisory Committee of Environmental Management, the Haskins Laboratory, the Shared Science Service Branch, the Marsh Botanical Gardens, the FAS Grants and Contracts Office and the FAS machine shops. He will also provide Central Campus oversight of and input to the Yale Animal Resource Center. Karen K. Lamb, as associate provost for biomedical and health affairs, will continue to work with Stephanie Spangler, deputy provost for biomedical and health affairs, on policy and oversight issues relating to research compliance areas (such as human subjects protections, conflict of interest, animal care and use, biological safety and radiation safety). In addition, Lamb will assume primary provostial responsibility for the administration and integration of the University's research compliance programs. She will also oversee the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Resource Office for Students with Disabilities, the Conflict of Interest Office and the HIPAA Privacy Office. Lamb will continue to work closely with Spangler on all areas relating to the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Epidemiology and Public Health. "I am confident that these promotions will enhance the level of service that my office will be able to provide," said Hamilton. "Although responsibilities have been reassigned, the deputy and associate provosts will continue to work as a team to provide comprehensive and timely attention to the academic, research and administrative needs of the University."
