Some of the biggest names in professional tennis will converge on the Yale campus Aug. 19-28 for the Pilot Pen Tennis competition, which this year will feature a men's competition in addition to the prestigious women's contest.
At press time, the female players committed to play in the Pilot Pen are defending champion Elena Bovina, as well as Amelie Mauresmo, Nadia Petrova and Elena Dementieva. The men's contest will feature Olympic gold medalists Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu, along with Taylor Dent, Tommy Haas, James Blake and many others.
Held at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, the Pilot Pen is now one of 10 major North American tournaments linked to the U.S. Open Series -- and the final stop for both the men's and women's players before the U.S. Open. It is the first combined men's and women's summer tournament leading into that event. The title sponsor is Pilot Pen and the presenting sponsor is Michelob ULTRA; Yale and the City of New Haven are host sponsors.
The event begins with qualifying rounds on Friday, Aug. 19. The main draw for the women's event will feature 28 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The men's event will feature a main draw of 48 singles and 16 doubles. Prizes are $585,000 for the winner of the women's contest and $650,000 for the champion in the men's event.
The Pilot Pen will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and CBS Sports.
Daily special events include Comcast/ESPN Kids Day on Sunday, Aug. 21, when tickets are $6 for the day's matches and children receive a goody bag, and Schick College Night, when students, faculty and staff from area colleges and universities receive a 33% savings on up to four middle-tier tickets. Concerts featuring jazz performers (open to Pilot Pen ticket holders only) will take place 6-7 p.m. Aug. 22-25 and 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. on Aug. 27.
