The Neville Brothers will kick off a series of free summer concerts on July 16 on the New Haven Green.

Yale co-sponsors 'City of Summer'
concerts and films

Free concerts and films will be offered on the New Haven Green during July and August, thanks, in part, to support from Yale.

The concerts and films are part of New Haven's "City of Summer" events made possible by Market New Haven, a not-for-profit organization funded by the City of New Haven, Yale and the local business community.

Concerts on the Green

The New Orleans funk group The Neville Brothers, the Grammy Award-winning jam band Blues Traveler and eclectic singer Vanessa Williams will perform during July in free concerts on the New Haven Green.

The concerts are presented by New Alliance Foundation. The Connecticut Association for the Performing Arts, managers of New Haven's Shubert Theater, produces the concerts for Market New Haven.

The concerts are one of the major summer attractions in New Haven, drawing hundreds of thousands to the Green on Saturday evenings. Each concert will begin with an opening artist at 6 p.m., followed by the headline artist at approximately 8 p.m.

The Neville Brothers will kick off the free concert series on July 16. The opening act will be Henry Shead.

Known as the "First Family of New Orleans Funk," the Neville Brothers (Aaron, Art, Cyril and Charles Neville) will perform some of the songs from their newest CD, "Walkin' in the Shadow of Life." Throughout their long careers as both solo performers and as a group, the Neville Brothers have been known for their combination of funk, soul and rhythm and blues.

Blues Traveler will take the stage on July 23, with Guy Davis as the opening-act performer.

One of the most successful live jam bands of the past 15 years, Blues Traveler will perform songs from the group's newest release, "Truth Be Told" and some of the group's classic hits. The group is made up of founding members John Popper (vocals and harmonica), Chan Kinchla (guitar) and Brendan Hill (drums) and newer additions Tad Kinchla (bass) and Ben Wilson (keyboards). Blues Traveler's Grammy-winning single "Run Around" holds the record for the longest-charting single ever in the history of the Billboard charts.

Vanessa Williams will perform on July 30. The opening act will be announced at a later date.

Williams' recording hits include "Save the Best For Last," "Dreamin'" and "Colors of the Wind." Her recordings have sold over four million albums worldwide and earned her multiple Grammy Award nominations. She has also starred on Broadway in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and in "Into the Woods." In film, she has starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Eraser."

'Friday Flicks'

Seven films will be shown on the Green this summer on consecutive Friday evenings as part of "Friday Flicks," which is now in its fifth season.

Comcast is the presenting sponsor of the film showings.

Each screening begins at 8 p.m. Moviegoers bring lawn chairs or blankets. In the event of rain, films will be shown at the Shubert Theater, 247 College St.

The remaining films in this year's series (which began July 8) are: July 15 -- "North by Northwest"; July 22 -- "The Proud Family"; July 29 -- "Singin' in the Rain"; Aug. 5 -- "Boomerang Big Bash" (a collage of short animated films); Aug. 12 -- "Casablanca"; and Aug. 19 -- "The Wizard of Oz."
