Safety training sessions

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will offer a series of training sessions for University employees in October.

Sessions will include "Radiation Safety Orientation," a mandatory course for personnel who work with radioactive material or frequent an area where radioactive materials are stored or used, and "Bloodborne Pathogens Annual Retraining," for personnel who continually work with human materials or bloodborne pathogens.

YUWO activities

The Yale University Women's Organization will host a "Lunch and Learn" talk and a bus trip to New York in October.

The fall "Lunch and Learn" series will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with an illustrated lecture by Angus Trumble, curator of painting and sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art. The lecture is based on Trumble's book, "A Brief History of the Smile," and will begin at noon in the Great Hall of the Institute of Sacred Music, 409 Prospect St. The event is free and open to the public. The bus trip to the historic Huguenot Village in New Paltz, New York, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 21. The fee for the trip is $70 and includes admission, transportation and a box lunch. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. For information and reservations, call (203) 387-7932.


Shen Prize

The Yale Undergraduate Musical Theatre Company is accepting applications for the Shen Prize for excellence in composition.

The winner will receive private lessons from renowned composer Ricky Ian Gordon in New York City. Gordon writes for concert, opera, dance, theater and film. He is currently the Composer in Residence at The Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Applicants should submit their scores and songs with a recording, if possible. Preferred styles include Broadway, gospel, blues, folk and classical. Submitted materials will not be returned.

Submissions are due by noon on Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the box outside Jonathan Edwards 755, Entryway I. For more information, visit the website at www.yale.edu/musicals.


Vendor Show

The Purchasing Department will host its annual scientific/laboratory vendor show at Harkness Lounge and Patio on Wednesday, Oct. 13, and outside the Kline Biology Tower and Bass Building courtyard on Thursday, Oct. 14.

The show will run on both days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 50 vendors will be on display. The show will also feature snacks, raffles and give-a-ways.


Peabody event

The Peabody Museum of Natural History will celebrate Columbus Day weekend with an in-depth survey of rice, from the study of its DNA to its cultivation and use by indigenous cultures.

Titled "Rice: From Indigenous Cultures to DNA," the event will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Monday, Oct. 11, and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10.

Child Conduct Clinic

The Child Conduct Clinic is currently accepting children between the ages of 2 and 13-1/2 who are displaying behavioral problems such as lying, disobeying parents, swearing, cheating or fighting. For more information, call (203) 432-9993.
