Yale Books in Brief

The following is a list of books recently or soon-to-be published by members of the Yale community. Descriptions are based on material provided by the publishers.

The Best Poems of the English Language: From Chaucer Through Frost
Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of Humanities and English
(HarperCollins)

The culmination of his lifelong love of poetry, "The Best Poems of the English Language" is an anthology covering six centuries of British and American poetry. It features Bloom's selections of what he deems the best poems written during that time -- beginning with Chaucer and ending with poets whose births predate 1900. Bloom bases his selection of works by more than 100 poets on three criteria: aesthetic splendor, intellectual power and wisdom. The book includes an essay called "The Art of Reading Poetry," describing Bloom's ideas on how a poem should be interpreted and appreciated.

Modularity in Development and Evolution
Edited by Gunter P. Wagner, professor of evolutionary biology, and Gerhard Schlosser
(University of Chicago Press)

"Modularity in Development and Evolution" offers an exploration of modules from developmental and evolutionary perspectives. Contributors discuss what modularity is, how it can be identified and modeled, how it originated and evolved, and its biological significance. The book covers modules at levels from genes to colonies, and focuses on their roles not just in structures but also in processes such as gene regulation.

A Field Guide to Sprawl
Dolores Hayden, professor of architecture and of American studies
(W.W. Norton)

"A Field Guide to Sprawl" serves as a dictionary or compendium of 51 slang words or phrases that today characterize land-use practices and the physical elements of sprawl. Dolores Hayden has earned the name "the Roger Tory Peterson of Sprawl," for the field guide, which includes such words as "zoomburb" (a city in the suburbs growing faster than a "boomburb"); "toad" (a temporary, obsolete, abandoned or derelict site); "litter on a stick" (billboards); and "alligator" (a real estate scheme gone belly up). The book explores the meaning of such vocabulary, as well as common building patterns, and illustrates in 75 color aerial photographs by Jim Wark the visual culture of sprawl and its impact on the American landscape.

Generating and Sustaining Nonprofit Earned Income
Edited by Sharon Oster, the Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the School of Management (SOM); and Cynthia W. Massarsky and Samantha L. Beinhacker, co-deputy directors of the SOM-Goldman Sachs Foundation Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures
(Wiley)

This book is a hands-on guide for helping an organization achieve greater financial stability through a diversified stream of revenue. In collaboration with the SOM-The Goldman Sachs Foundation Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures, the book identifies the best practices for generating a reliable earned income stream and freeing an organization from dependence on foundations and other donors. Topics covered include securing financial capital, legal and tax considerations, leadership strategies, techniques for pricing of goods and services, and deploying resources effectively, among many others.

Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide
Michael D. Powers, assistant clinical professor at the Child Study Center, and Janet Poland
(HarperCollins)

A comprehensive guide to Asperger's syndrome, this book answers parents' most common questions and offers practical advice on topics ranging from diagnosis of the condition to helping children with Asperger's syndrome develop social skills. The book also features the voices of real children, who offer insights about how they cope with the condition.

Speaking of Nursing ... Narratives of Practice, Research, Policy and the Profession
Donna Diers, the Annie W. Goodrich Professor Emerita
(Jones and Bartlett Publishers)

"Speaking of Nursing ..." is a compilation of unpublished and published pieces spanning Donna Diers' career as a nurse beginning in the 1960s, through her years as dean of the Yale School of Nursing, and beyond. Edited by Frederick A. Pottle, the late Sterling Professor Emeritus at Yale
(Yale University Press)

This is a new Yale Nota Bene reissue of Boswell's famous journal, written when he was 22 years old and living in London. Covering nine months of his life, Boswell's journal is an intimate account of his encounters with both the high-life and low-life aspects of London at the time, providing a vivid 18th-century portrait of the city and of Boswell's life as a "man about town."
