YSN receives $2.5M grant for research center
The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) received a $2.5 million grant to design interventions for populations at high risk for health problems due to behavior, age, gender, minority status, or the presence of disease or disability.
The funding from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research will enable the YSN's Exploratory Center on Self and Family Management for Vulnerable Populations to evolve into a Core Center, one of only nine such centers at schools of nursing across the country.
"This means we will be able to move our research forward more rapidly and positions us to be one of the lead schools in terms of making contributions to that science," says Margaret Grey, YSN associate dean for research and director of the center.
Four pilot studies that will be supported in the first year will look at asymptomatic myocardial ischemia in Type 2 diabetes; home visiting for teen mothers; women's role in the management of advanced ovarian cancer; and self-management behaviors relating to the metabolic syndrome in childhood cancer survivors.
The center will promote collaboration among investigators through the use of shared resources, increasing communication, fostering young scholars, and development of knowledge in self management interventions.
