Reunion focuses on law education
in an era of globalization

The international legal landscape, and the ways Yale can prepare future jurists for its challenges, will be the focus of the Law School's 2004 Alumni Weekend, to be held Friday-Sunday, Oct. 8-10.

The theme of this year's gathering is "How Should a Yale Law School Education Address Global Issues?" Several of the events are open to the public free of charge.

In a letter to alumni, Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh notes: "As the 15th dean of Yale Law School, my task is simple: to make sure that the greatest law school of the 20th century becomes an even greater law school in the 21st century. That means staying true to our values and traditions, but meeting the challenge of globalization. ... At Yale Law School we have already integrated an international perspective into many of our core courses and also have a variety of internationally focused programs."

Among the topics that will be addressed at the reunion, he added, are: "What is the best way to build on these strengths to create a law school that is explicitly global in focus? How can we better train our students in the professional responsibilities and regulatory frameworks of a transnational legal profession? And how do we call our students to public service in the new global century?"

The reunion program will bring together alumni, faculty, jurists and representatives of international private and governmental organizations.

The public is invited to attend the following events, all of which will be held at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

* A panel discussion on "Terrorism and the Rule of Law: The Challenge for Global Constitutionalism," moderated by Professor Paul C. Gewirtz '70 J.D., on Friday, 10 a.m.-noon in Rm. 127. Participants will include justices from the Supreme Courts of Israel and Canada and the Constitutional Court of Peru.

* A panel discussion on "Judging International Law," moderated by Koh, on Friday, 3-5 p.m. in Rm. 127. Participants will include current and former judges from the International Court of Justice at The Hague, federal judges and a member of the President's Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction.

* Concurrent panel discussions on Saturday, 9:30-10:45 a.m.: "Global Human Rights," moderated by Professor James J. Silk '89 J.D. and featuring representatives from international human rights organizations, in Levinson Auditorium; and "Global Markets," moderated by Professor Jonathan R. Macey '82 J.D. and featuring representatives from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and global corporations, in Rm. 127.

* Concurrent panel discussions on Saturday 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.: "Global Governance," moderated by Professor Oona A. Hathaway '97 J.D. and featuring international legal scholars and practitioners, in Rm. 127; and "Global Connections," moderated by Professor Jack M. Balkin and featuring a former chair of the Federal Communications Commission and experts on the media and technology, in Levinson Auditorium.

Other highlights of the weekend include a reception and dinner in Yale Commons on Friday night, which is open to alumni only. This will be followed by a program at the Law School at 8:15 p.m., which is open to the public, featuring "A Global Conversation" between Koh; Carla A. Hills '58 LL.B., chair and chief executive officer of Hills & Company, International Consultants, former U.S. trade representative and former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and Robert E. Rubin '64 LL.B., chair of the executive committee and member of the office of the chair of Citigroup Inc., and former secretary of the U.S. Treasury.

Also during the reunion, the Yale Law School Association will present its Award of Merit to Anthony T. Kronman, Sterling Professor of Law and former dean of the Law School.
