Campus Notes Connecticut Academy lecture The Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, a scholarly organization affiliated with Yale, is sponsoring a lecture titled "The President, the Supreme Court and the War on Terror" at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct 19. The lecture will take place in the Rittenberg Lounge, Mather Hall, Trinity College, in Hartford. The lecturer will be Adrienne Fulco, associate professor and director of the Public Policy and Law Program at Trinity College, Hartford. The event is free and the public is invited. Gustav Ranis, the Frank Altschul Professor of International Economics, was one of the speakers in the United Nations Development Programme's "Human Development Training Course" at Oxford University last month. More than 40 developing countries preparing national human development reports were represented.
Christopher S. Wood, professor of the history of art, will deliver the Ellen Maria Gorrissen Berlin Prize Lecture at the American Academy in Berlin next month. The lecture, titled "Counter-Enchantments: Renaissance Art and the New World," will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11. The academy is a private, non-profit center for advanced study. Its mission is to "foster intellectual and professional ties between Germans and Americans in the humanities, public affairs and the arts."
The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center at the School of Medicine will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Friday, Oct. 15. The celebration will begin with a wine and cheese reception for faculty board members, deans, administrators and fellow area directors in the Beaumont Room, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. at 4 p.m. A dinner in Harkness Lounge will follow at 5:30 p.m. for past and present families. The center recently opened a new kindergarten. The kindergarten is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is licensed by the State of Connecticut. It is a 10-month program open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and has 10 children and two certified teachers.
Dr. Richard Marottoli, associate professor of internal medicine and director of the Veteran Administration Medical Center's Geriatrics and Extended Care Division, will discuss "Memory Fitness: A Guide to Successful Aging" by Giles O. Einstein and Mark A. McDaniel at the "Books Sandwiched In" discussion on Thursday, Oct. 14. The talk will take place noon-1 p.m. in the community program room of the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St. Audience members may bring lunch; drinks are provided.
