Taking a walk-through
School of Architecture students and faculty members, city officials and others recently explored the new house on Hudson Street in New Haven that was the design project of first-year architecture students. The three-bedroom home has large windows and deck doors at the back of the house and a wall with built-in shelving for storage and display of decorative objects. A challenge for this year's students was to create a family-friendly home in an urban environment, where neighboring facilities include a prison and a brake shop. A walled-in deck will provide privacy for the homeowners. Students spent the summer learning firsthand about building as they worked on the house, which boasts cabinetry and other furnishings donated by the Swedish furniture company IKEA.
