Peabody event

"The Dog (and Cat!) Days of Summer" will be celebrated at the Peabody Museum of Natural History on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 28, from noon to 4 p.m.

Among the highlights of the event will be a visit on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Atka, a three-year-old Arctic wolf. Atka travels to schools, nature centers and other events to help the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York, educate people about wolves.

Other activities will include sheepherding and frisbee dog demonstrations. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet dogs that help humans and to learn about the unique behaviors of cats. Museum staff will display skulls, skeletons and pelts from the museum's wild dog and cat collections. Individuals may also enter their dogs in a contest at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

For more information or to register for the contest, call (203) 432-3776. For a complete schedule, contest rules and categories, visit the website at www.peabody.yale.edu/events/dogdays. Events and contests are free with museum admission. Some outdoor events, such as sheepherding, may be viewed at no charge.

Tax notice

The Tax Office has issued a notice for international affiliates of the University.

All new international students, scholars, faculty members and other visitors who will receive any payments through the University payroll system -- for example, stipends, fellowships or wages -- must meet with the Tax Office prior to receiving payment.

At this meeting, a member of the office will review the individual's tax status to determine proper tax withholding, including whether the individual is eligible to claim a reduced income tax withholding rate pursuant to a tax treaty. The office will also determine if payments to the individual are exempt from Social Security and Medicare (FICA) tax withholding. For more information regarding payments to international individuals, visit the website at www.yale.edu/tax/int.

If an individual has not been set up on the payroll system prior to meeting with the Tax Office, he or she will need to provide documentation from the department regarding the position held (for example, postdoctoral fellow or postdoctoral associate) and type of payment (for example, stipend, fellowship or wage) at the appointment.

International students and scholars may schedule appointments through the International Tax Office website at www.yale.edu/tax/int/appointments.html. In addition, department administrators may schedule an appointment on behalf of an international student or scholar. To schedule an appointment with the office directly, call (203) 432-5530 or (203) 432-5597, or send e-mail to jodie.stewart-moore@yale.edu or daysi.cardona@yale.edu.

During the months of August and September, appointments will be scheduled 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Thursday,

Volunteers sought

The Department of Linguistics is seeking volunteers to participate in a speech production experiment to be conducted at Haskins Laboratories.

The experiment will involve ultrasound imaging of the tongue and head movement tracking with a lightweight helmet attached to infrared sensors. The experiment will last for one hour. Participants will be asked to repeat English words after a visual prompt. There are no risks or discomfort associated with the procedure.

To participate, volunteers must be a native speaker of English with normal hearing and speech. Compensation of $20 will be provided. To apply, contact leonardo.oliveira@yale.edu.
