Hu Jintao

President of China to speak at Yale Sept. 8

President Hu Jintao of China will speak at the University on Thursday, Sept. 8, as part of his first trip to the United States since taking office in 2003.

"We are pleased that President Hu will be addressing our students and faculty during his visit," said President Richard C. Levin. "It will add a new chapter to the long history of Yale's links to China and provide our community with an important perspective on China today."

Yale has a long and deep connection with China. The first Chinese student to study in the United States, Yung Wing, came to Yale, graduating in 1854. Today, there are more than 600 Chinese students and scholars at Yale, more than from any other country, and nearly 60 Yale faculty and scholars are engaged in research projects and educational programs across China.

Hu will present a public address at 11 a.m. in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. Because seating will be very limited, the talk will be televised at multiple sites around the campus; broadcast on Yale cable television; and streamed on the World Wide Web. See the Office of Public Affairs website at www.yale.edu/opa for specific information.

Later that day, there will be a panel discussion at 4 p.m. in the Law School's Levinson Auditorium, 127 Wall St. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will be hosted by Ian Shapiro, the William R. Kenan Professor of Political Science and director of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies. Panelists will be Deborah Davis, professor of sociology; John Gaddis, the Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History, chair of the International Affairs Council and professor of political history; Paul Gewirtz, the Potter Stewart Professor of Constitutional Law and director of Yale's China Law Center; Harold Hongju Koh, dean of the Law School and the Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law; Jonathan Spence, Sterling Professor of History; and Ernesto Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization and professor in the field of international economics and politics.
