The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) is launching a new master's program in Nursing Management, Policy and Leadership that prepares registered nurses (R.N.'s) for leadership positions in health care delivery and health policy, focusing on patient safety and quality of care.
The new program will feature innovative Web-based methods combined with intensive monthly campus sessions, both of which are designed to fit into to students' busy personal and professional lives. The first group of students will matriculate in January 2006.
"The format of the new program is responsive to the needs of today's practitioners and will prepare nurses to lead in an increasingly complex health care environment," says YSN Acting Dean Katherine R. Jones.
Sharon Sanderson, director of student recruitment and placement at YSN, explains the major benefits of the program: "The program is designed specifically for working R.N.'s. It features individualized assignments and clinical placements to meet their work schedule and to give them the ability to balance academic responsibilities with personal and work activities. Students will be mentored by nationally recognized scholars and will have access to extensive resources of Yale University."
"This is a great opportunity for R.N.'s to acquire the skills necessary for leadership and managerial positions in health care delivery systems, government, and other private and public settings," says Sally Cohen, associate professor of nursing and director of the Center for Healthy Policy and Ethics. Cohen, who will direct the new program, is also project director for a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration that supports the new program.
