The Yale School of Drama will present a 1920s-inspired adaptation of "Hamlet," Shakespeare's most famous tragedy, Dec. 8-14 at the University Theatre, 222 York St.
By radically abridging Shakespeare's text and utilizing a fusion of movement, original music and humor, director May Adrales hopes to make the play accessible to new audiences and bring a fresh experience to veteran theatergoers as they witness the crisis of faith of the young prince of Denmark.
Adrales is a third-year directing student at the School of Drama, where she has directed "Antony and Cleopatra," "The War is Over" and "Deuce." She served as artistic director of the Yale Cabaret in 2004-2005. She was an artistic associate at Long Wharf Theatre and produced the Cabaret series at the Bard Summerscape Festival. She has also directed and developed work at various other theaters throughout the country and has assisted Lee Breuer, Mary Zimmerman, John Rando, David Chambers and David Warren. She is a Drama League Directing Fellow and a directing associate at the Lark Theatre.
Original music for "Hamlet" is composed by Greg Hennigan. The eight-person ensemble features Brian McManamon as Hamlet, Ryan Quinn as Claudius/Ghost, Emily Dorsch as Gertrude, Bridget Jones as Ophelia/Priest, Michael Braun as Polonius/Laertes, Jim Noonan as Horatio, Joe Gallagher as Rosencrantz/Player/King/Gravedigger/Lord, and Blake Hackler as Guildenstern/Player Queen/Gravedigger/Osric.
The production includes set design by Maiko Chii, costume design by Deb O, lighting design by Ji-Youn Chang and sound design by Arielle Edwards. Katrina Olson is the stage manager, and Michael Walkup is the dramaturg.
"Hamlet" is being performed at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 8 and 9, and Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 13 and 14, and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. Single tickets are $18; $12 for students and seniors. Discounted group rates are available. Tickets may be purchased by calling (203) 432-1234, online at www.yale.edu/drama/hamlet; or in person at the Yale Rep box office at 1120 Chapel St.
