Six members of engineering faculty win prestigious awards
Six members of the engineering faculty were granted prestigious awards in recent months.
The National Science Foundation awarded $500,000 to Sakhar Tatikonda, assistant professor of electrical engineering, and David Pollard, professor of statistics and mathematics, for the support of eight calendar-year graduate students they will co-advise over the next three years. The project will draw ideas from statistics, computer science, engineering and statistical physics.
Tso-Ping Ma, the Raymond John Wean Professor of Electrical Engineering, received the Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation Award for 2005. The award of $16,700 is given to outstanding domestic and overseas researchers of Chinese ancestry working in electronics, computers, communications or related fields. Ma was chosen by the Taiwan-based foundation for his significant theoretical innovations and advances in experimental technology of semiconductor devices and their applications in industry.
Lisa D. Pfefferle, professor of chemical engineering, and Daniel E. Prober, professor and chair of the Department of Applied Physics and professor of physics, have received 2005 IBM Faculty Awards. They were cited for the "quality of [their] program and its importance to [the] industry." Each award includes $40,000 for research in recognition of that achievement. Yale is the only university to have two recipients this year.
Richard K. Chang, the Henry Ford II Professor of Applied Physics and professor of physics and of electrical engineering, received the 2005 David Sinclair Award from the American Association of Aerosol Research. The award memorializes "one of aerosol science's great innovators, known for his knowledge, ingenuity and energy." Chang was recognized for his sustained excellence in aerosol research and technology -- optics, laser diagnostics and chemistry of aerosols, droplets and microparticles.
