Students will vie in simulated court cases during Invitational Mock Trial Tournament
Nearly 500 students from across the country will gather on the campus Dec. 2 and 3, to participate in the 10th annual Invitational Mock Trial Tournament -- the largest intercollegiate invitational mock trial tournament in the United States.
The event is hosted by the Yale College Mock Trial Association. The tournament will include individuals from mock trial teams from Boston, Brown, New York, Princeton and Columbia universities, Amherst College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, among other.
"The Yale Invitational will showcase some of the finest mock trial talent from throughout the nation," says Yale College junior Benjamin Felt, the tournament director.
During the course of the tournament, teams of approximately eight students will compete in four rounds of trial, twice as plaintiffs and twice as defendants. The students will play the roles of both attorneys and witnesses in a hypothetical criminal case involving a defendant accused of kidnapping his best friend's child. Attorneys and judges from throughout Connecticut have volunteered to adjudicate the rounds.
The opening ceremony for the tournament will be held at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, at the Omni New Haven Hotel, corner of Chapel and Temple streets. The opening ceremony is open to the public.
Rounds will take place throughout the afternoon and the next day, with the championship round taking place in the evening on Saturday.
