Holiday gifts at 'Alternative Market' help people in need
Holiday shoppers can double their present-purchasing potential at the annual Alternative Gift Market being held 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Dwight Hall common room, 67 High St.
The idea behind the annual market is simple. In honor of a friend or relative, shoppers can buy a gift of food, medicine, livestock or education for individuals in need in New Haven, nationwide and around the world.
They can also purchase unique gifts offered by international organizations and local New Haven agencies, while listening to performances by Yale's world music groups. The event is sponsored by Reach Out: The Yale College Partnership for International Service and Dwight Hall at Yale.
Among the organizations that will be represented at this year's event are:
* Alternative Gifts International (www.altgifts.org), which provides much-needed supplies and services for communities in need in the United States and around the world. Some gifts include: Emergency Relief Supplies for victims of the earthquake in Pakistan and India for $20; a well of drinking water in Sudan that provides clean water for 10 people for $11; and the chance to save one acre of the endangered coral reef off the coast of Jamaica for $6.
* Heifer International (www.heifer.org), which offers individuals the opportunity to give the gift of animals to families in need around the world. Heifer International provides all types of animals that can be raised for food and profit for families in underdeveloped countries. The assortment of animals includes, but is not limited to, honeybees for $30; chickens for $20; pigs for $120; llamas for $150; water buffalo for $250; and cows (heifers) for $500. Those who can't afford a whole animal can buy "shares" of an animal for about a tenth of the cost.
* St. Thomas More Soup Kitchen, which will be selling wooden spoons, pot holders and soup pots to raise money for their efforts to provide meals for the homeless in New Haven.
* Cornerstone (www.al-corn.org), a New Haven non-profit that aids individuals and families in South Central Connecticut who are affected by mental illness and/or substance abuse, which will be selling arts and crafts created by people who have benefited from their services.
* Other local New Haven agencies -- including the Youth Continuum, New Haven Home Recovery, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and Elm City Parks Conservancy -- which will be selling more traditional gifts.
