Scott Barrett

Expert on global environmental issues
named Distinguished Visiting Fellow

The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization has welcomed Scott Barrett, an expert on international environmental issues, as Distinguished Visiting Fellow this spring.

Barrett is director of the International Policy Program and professor of environmental economics and international political economy at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.

His work explores the interaction between natural and social systems, particularly at the international and global levels, focusing to a large extent on the design of international institutions. He is renowned for his research on global environmental issues, especially negotiating international environmental agreements, the topic of his book "Environment and Statecraft: The Strategy of Environmental Treaty-Making." He received the Erik Kempe Prize for his research in this area.

His current work includes forthcoming articles and chapters on averting global catastrophe, an economic theory of international environmental law, disease control and eradication, and financing as a strategic incentive for international cooperation.

During his fellowship at Yale, Barrett will focus his research and writing on a range of global and multilateral issues, including the environment, global public goods, global health, the nuclear dilemma and knowledge as an engine for economic growth.

To support Barrett in his work and to enrich the Yale community during his presence on campus, the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization will host faculty and student workshops to explore topics he is addressing in his research and to further their discussion on campus. Workshop topics will include the emerging international climate change regime, infectious diseases, nuclear non-proliferation policy and the production of knowledge for development.
