The Department of English continues its series of annual staged readings at the Yale Center for British Art on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m., with a performance titled "London's River: The Thames in Verse and Prose."
This hour-long event complements the British Art Center's exhibit "London: John Virtue" and the accompanying exhibition at Jonathan Edwards College titled "John Virtue: New Small Paintings of the Thames," each of which features contemporary paintings of the historic city by the noted British artist. Both exhibitions are on view through April 23.
The readings represent five centuries of comment on the English capital's oldest thoroughfare, and are taken from works by Dunbar, Pepys, Pope, Blake, Wordsworth, Owen, Conrad, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, H.G. Wells and others.
The works will be performed by Professors Marie Borroff, David Bromwich and Lawrence Manley, along with graduate student Erin Peterson. The program will be directed by Murray Biggs.
The event is free and open to the public.
