Women's Health Research at Yale (WHRY) has presented Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro with its Champion Award for her "outstanding and abiding" commitment to women's health research and related legislation on Capitol Hill.
DeLauro was recognized for her progressive stance on women's health care issues, her consistent support for increased funding for women's health research, and her valuable contributions to the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee and the National Institutes of Health Office for Women's Health Research.
"The support of influential legislators is of critical importance in the effort to improve the health of women and, in fact, of the entire population," said Dr. Carolyn Mazure, director of WHRY. "We think her efforts in this area deserve special recognition."
Mazure presented DeLauro with the award Jan. 26 at the Yale Visitor Center on Elm Street.
DeLauro said: "By supporting more than 45 new clinical, behavioral and basic science research studies on women with dozens of spin-off investigations, WHRY is expanding our thinking about what women's health really means. They are redefining women's health to include conditions that affect women, including heart disease, osteoporosis, depression and autoimmune diseases, as well as domestic violence and aging. What's more, they are working with the community in translating research findings into practical new health information so that women can use these findings and get the most out of them."
WHRY is an interdisciplinary research program that was established to respond to the need for scientific information on women's health and on sex-specific factors determining health and disease.
