Mark Dollhopf

Janus founder to head Alumni Association

Mark Dollhopf, founder and president of Janus Development, has been named executive director of the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA), announced Vice President and University Secretary Linda K. Lorimer.

Dollhopf, a 1977 graduate of Yale College, founded Janus Development in 1993. The firm counsels non-profit institutions about strategic planning, leadership and board development as well as management and marketing. Strategic planning clients have included Junior Achievement of Central Florida, the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Diocese of Orlando, the Colony Foundation and Liberty Community Services of Connecticut, among others.

"Mark has that rare combination of a person who thinks strategically, who generates exciting ideas and who then makes sure that they get implemented," said Lorimer.

Dollhopf began his career in 1977 as a development staff member at Yale. In 1980 he co-founded the firm of Anderson, Cole & Dollhopf, and there pioneered new institutional advancement techniques for universities and independent schools, including the first professional campus direct response programs. His firm served over 100 education, health, social service, political and religious organizations, including Yale, Brown, Columbia and Duke universities; Exeter and Andover preparatory schools; the National Wildlife Federation; the Arthritis Foundation; the Archdioceses of New York, Boston, St. Louis and Chicago; Catholic Relief Services; and Lutheran Social Services. In 1989 Anderson, Cole & Dollhopf was acquired by TelecomUSA.

A Whiffenpoof and a Glee Club member while at Yale, Dollhopf has conducted the University Glee Club of New Haven for nearly 20 years. As a vocalist and soloist, he has recorded on several labels.

In 1997 Dollhopf founded the Yale Alumni Chorus, which has completed four major international concert tours. Nearly 1,000 alumni and friends have participated on concert tours and events representing Yale in Great Britain, China and South America. The group also traveled to Russia, becoming the first American chorus ever to perform at the Kremlin.

Dollhopf's nomination was endorsed by the AYA Board of Governors and approved by President Richard C. Levin.

His appointment is effective July 17. Carolyn Claflin will continue to serve as interim AYA executive director until Dollhopf's term begins.
