Drama school hosts a memorial tribute to award-winning producer Benjamin Mordecai

The Yale School of Drama will host "Remembering Ben: A Tribute to the Life and Work of Benjamin Mordecai" on Monday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m. at the University Theatre, 222 York St.

Mordecai, who died May 8 of cancer, came to Yale in 1982 and variously served as managing director of the School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theatre, associate dean of the drama school and adjunct professor there. He was a co-founder and producing director of the Indiana Repertory Theatre for 11 years before he came to Yale. As managing director of the Yale Rep, he transferred nine plays from the Yale Rep to Broadway, including five by August Wilson.

Mordecai was also one of the nation's leading commercial producers, with shows on Broadway, off-Broadway, in London and in Moscow. His work earned him four Tony Awards and the Olivier Award, among others.

Contributions in Mordecai's memory may be made to The Benjamin Mordecai Fund, Yale School of Drama, P.O. Box 208244, New Haven, CT 06520-8244.
