Thomas M. Troeger

Thomas Troeger is designated
as the Cox Lantz Professor

Thomas M. Troeger, the newly named J. Edward and Ruth Cox Lantz Professor of Christian Communication, is a renowned teacher of preaching who joined the Divinity School faculty in May.

Troeger also holds a formal courtesy appointment at the Institute of Sacred Music.

Prior to coming to Yale, Troeger taught homiletics since 1991 at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, where he was the Ralph E. and Norma E. Peck Professor of Preaching and Communications and dean of academic affairs. At Iliff, he was noted for encouraging his students to examine biblical texts in innovative ways, connect their preaching to "lived experience" and to develop ways to fuel the imagination of people in the pews.

Troeger has published six books about preaching that are used widely in the classroom and by clergy. His most recent books are "Preaching and Worship," "Above the Moon Earth Rises: Hymn Texts, Anthems and Poems for a New Creation" and "Preaching While the Church is Under Reconstruction. The Visionary Role of Preachers in a Fragmented World."

Also a student of worship and liturgics and an accomplished flutist, Troeger has published two volumes and hymns and poetry and has co-written five books on worship and church music. His work appears in the hymnals of most denominations.

Troeger is a 1967 graduate of Yale College and holds a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Doctor of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary and Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from Dickinson College. He taught at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School from 1977 to 1991.

An ordained minister in both the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Episcopal Church (he is dually aligned with both traditions), he served for seven years earlier in his career as an associate pastor of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church. For three years he hosted the Season of Worship broadcast for Cokesbury, and he has led conferences and lectureships in worship and preaching throughout North America and in Holland, Australia and Japan. He is a former president of the Academy of Homiletics.
