Works by one of China's most noted contemporary Christian artists will be on view in the exhibition "Look Toward the Heavens: The Art of He Qi," on display March 6-April 26 at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).
He Qi is the 2005-2006 Paul T. Lauby artist-in-residence at the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven.
The painter has been committed to the artistic creation of modern Chinese Christian art since 1983. In his works, he blends together Chinese folk customs and traditional Chinese painting techniques with the western art of the Middle and Modern Ages.
In addition to being a professor at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, He Qi is a tutor for master's-level students in the philosophy department of Nanjing University. He is a member of the Chinese Artist Association and serves on the board of the Asian Christian Art Association. His art has been featured on the BBC and HK Cable TV, and in Asian Week, Far Eastern Economic Review, Christianity Today, Upper Room, Augsburg Fortress, Sing Tao Daily News and The World Daily.
A reception will be held to honor the artist on Thursday, March 23, 4:30-6 p.m. at ISM, 409 Prospect St. Free parking is available.
The exhibition -- presented in partnership with the Overseas Ministries Study Center with support from the Divinity School -- is open to the public free of charge 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call the ISM at (203) 432-5180.
