Competition aims to educate campuses nationwide about recycling

The next time you toss a can or bottle into a recycling bin, or, better yet, the next time you reuse a cardboard box instead of throwing it away, feel free to take a victory lap: You've just scored one for the team.

Yale is in the midst of a 10-week competition known as RecycleMania, which pits 93 colleges across the country against each other to determine which campus community excels at recycling. The contest, which concludes April 8, judges schools based on their recycling rate, the pounds of recyclables per person and waste minimization efforts.

Every member of the Yale community -- students, faculty and staff -- is part of the Bulldog "team," notes Cyril May, who is heading the campus' RecycleMania effort as coordinator of the Yale Recycling Department. "Everyone at Yale is participating in RecycleMania every day through their decisions to recycle instead of trash their paper, boxes, cans, etc."

In an effort to facilitate recycling and publicize the RecycleMania competition, students have been visiting offices across campus to encourage community members to recycle. They have been also awarding certificates and donuts to offices with good recycling habits. Departments interested in having a RecycleMania team visit their office should call (203) 432-6852.

While Team Yale is producing less trash than its longtime rival Harvard in the RecycleMania competition, it was trailing in the overall competition at the third-week mark. To improve campus efforts, the Yale Recycling Department urges community members to follow these guidelines:

* Always recycle mixed paper, cardboard, cans and bottles (glass metal and plastics #1 and #2).

* Remember that stapled papers and post-its are recyclable, but paper clips, plastic bags and any items containing food and beverage residue are not.

* To recycle electronics, notify the Yale Office of Environmental Health and Safety through an electronic form available online at www.yale.edu/oehs or call (203) 785-3551.

* To donate usable furniture, contact Yale Recycling at (203) 432-6852 or visit www.yale.edu/recycling.

A list of recycling guidelines is available from Yale Recycling at the above number.

RecycleMania is endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Recycling Coalition's College and University Recycling Council and the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program. For more information, visit www.recyclemaniacs.org.
