Steven B. Smith

Steven Smith to serve a third
term as Branford College master

Steven B. Smith, the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science, has been reappointed as master of Branford College for a five-year term beginning July 1.

This will be Smith's third term as Branford master; he assumed the post in 1996.

In a letter to the college community, President Richard C. Levin noted that Smith's reappointment was recommended by a committee headed by Judith Colton, professor of the history of art, which "consulted broadly with fellows, students and staff." The committee also included Nory Babbitt, director of club and association relations at the Association of Yale Alumni, and Thomas Kavanagh, the August R. Street Professor of French.

The committee described Smith as "an intellectual leader and a visible, supportive, encouraging presence in Branford College," wrote Levin, adding: "Master Smith is accessible and involved in residential college life, and students find him open to suggestions, energetic and fun, and someone who enjoys introducing new events into the life of the college. At the same time, he sometimes operates 'behind the scenes,' so that not all students are aware of the care with which he makes activities run smoothly and successfully."

Smith and his wife, Associate Master Susan Smith, are known for "hosting bagel brunches and cannoli or cheesecake study breaks, along with other parties and master's teas," noted Levin, adding that the associate master "encourages the arts in the college and takes an interest in students' lives."

An expert on the history of political philosophy, Smith has written widely on Hegel, Aristotle, Rousseau and Spinoza. He has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1984.
