New OCR programs allow for the scientific sharing of plasmid clones and genetically modified mice

The Office of Cooperative Research (OCR) has introduced two new programs which will allow Yale life sciences faculty to deposit plasmid clones and mouse models to facilitate their dissemination to the research community at large.

These programs are designed to relieve Yale faculty of the cost and burden of responding to numerous requests for such reagents.

Yale has entered into a Depository Agreement with Addgene Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sharing of plasmid constructs described in published literature. Addgene stores original plasmid samples submitted by scientists and distributes them for use by the research community at large.

Yale faculty may deposit plasmid clones at Addgene by following the instructions on the Addgene website at www.addgene.org. Addgene will then respond to requests for these plasmids from other researchers by providing the plasmids under a Uniform Biological Materials Transfer Agreement. If the researcher is from a for-profit corporation, the request is first diverted to Yale's OCR so that a non-exclusive license may be negotiated. Once such a license is negotiated, Yale will then provide permission for Addgene to ship the plasmid.

Yale has also entered into a Distribution Agreement with The Jackson Laboratories (www.jax.org). Yale faculty may deposit genetically modified mice at Jax, which will then harbor, breed and sell the mice at a nominal cost to the research community at large. As above, requests from for-profit corporations are first diverted to Yale's OCR so that a non-exclusive license may be negotiated. Once a license is negotiated, Yale will then provide permission for Jax to ship the mice. For its services, Jax will receive a small percentage of any license fee paid to Yale.

OCR encourages all Yale life sciences faculty to take advantage of these two programs. For further information, contact the office at (203) 436-8096 or ocr@yale.edu.
