Dwight Hall fundraiser to include inaugural social justice award Dwight Hall, the non-profit umbrella organization that supports community service and activism at Yale, will host its annual fundraising event on Thursday, April 20, at 5 p.m in Dwight Hall Chapel, 67 High St. The evening, which will boast a "Casablanca" theme, will include a dinner, a silent auction and the presentation of the inaugural Samuel Slie Award for Social Justice to the New Haven minister for whom it is named. The event is open to the public. Tickets -- $25 in advance and $30 at the door -- are available by calling (203) 432-9041. The evening will mark the conclusion of an auction that has been open online for several weeks at www.dwighthall2006.cmarket.com. Among the items that will be available for bid at the silent auction are trips, tickets to games and shows, a rare signed copy of Robert Frost poetry and more. "Dwight Hall constantly strives to improve our world and the lives of New Haven residents," says Sean Glass, a member of Dwight Hall's board of directors. "The fundraising event is a great way for the community to visit and support the work of all the organizations under the Dwight Hall umbrella." Founded by undergraduates in 1886, Dwight Hall is one of the oldest charitable organizations in the United States and is the largest student-run organization in the country, with over 73 service and advocacy groups. The programs it supports touch the lives of thousands of New Haven residents each year. While Dwight Hall is located at Yale, it is a separate organization and is not supported financially by the University. Dwight Hall is run by an executive committee of students and a full time staff, supported by grants and donations. As part of this year's fundraiser, the Reverend Samuel N. Slie, associate pastor of the Church in Christ in Yale, will be honored for his work as an advocate and volunteer for numerous interdenominational New Haven and international relief projects. In addition to his work at the church, Slie is a member of the board of the Central Coast YMCA and the United National Association. He is also a former coordinator of Interfaith Cooperative Ministries, composed of 38 religious congregations throughout the city, and a past president of the National Campus Ministers Association. Dwight Hall is continuing to add items for inclusion in the auction. Local businesses or individuals wishing to contribute or sponsor the event should contact Hannah Croasmun at (203) 432-9041. All donations are tax deductible.
