Symposium to look at 'Success with Learning Differences' An individual who overcame the challenges of dyslexia to become one of the nation's top business leaders will be one of the featured speakers at "Success with Learning Differences," a symposium being held 7-9 p.m. on Monday, April 24, in the Luce Hall auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Provost's Committee on Resources for Students and Employees with Disabilities, the Yale College Dean's Office, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. A reception will follow the talk. Provost Andrew Hamilton will present opening remarks at the symposium, which will feature the following: * Paul Orfalea, founder and chair emeritus of Kinko's and author of the 2005 autobiography "Copy This! Lessons from a hyperactive dyslexic who turned a bright idea into one of America's best companies." Orfalea founded Kinko's in 1970 near the University of California at Santa Barbara; today, there are 1,200 Kinko's worldwide. Since retiring in 2000, Orfalea has worked to support organizations addressing "learning differences." * Dr. Sally E. Shaywitz, professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine and author of the 2003 national bestseller, "Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level." * Dr. Bennett Shaywitz is professor of pediatrics and neurology and chief of pediatric neurology at the medical school. The Shaywitzes are co-directors of the Yale Center for the Study of Learning, Reading and Attention. They are leaders in applying rigorous science, including brain imaging, to advocate for and to benefit children, young adults and adults who are dyslexic.
