Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai lecture cancelled

Since the publication of the print edition of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar, we have learned that the lecture on "Faith and the Environment" by 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, originally scheduled for April 20 in Battell Chapel, has been canceled due to the recent plane crash that took the lives of several colleagues of Maathai in the Kenyan government. Maathai, founder of the Green Belt environmental movement, currently serves as the country's assistant minister for environment and natural resources. Yale's School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) and Divinity School (YDS) had organized the event.

Deans Harold Attridge and James G. Speth of YDS and F&ES, respectively, issued this statement: "Our deepest condolences go out to Wangari Maathai on the tragic loss of her friends and colleagues. Dr. Maathai's vision as a woman of faith has shed new light on questions of religion and the environment, and it is our hope that her faith will now support her in this most difficult of times. Our prayers are with Wangari Maathai and the people of Kenya."
