Former airline official to lead Yale's labor-management initiatives

Ralph Craviso, former vice president of ,Workforce Effectiveness for Lucent Technologies, has been named as senior director of workforce effectiveness in the Department of Human Resources (HR).

"We have already undertaken several initiatives, including a renewed focus on staffing, career development and the implementation of many changes related to last year's workplace survey," said Robert Schwartz, associate vice president and chief human resources officer, in a letter announcing the appointment. "One of our main objectives is the desire to accelerate the gains we are achieving with our labor-management initiatives."

Craviso, who assumed his new post on May 1, will lead Yale's labor-management initiatives. He was head of labor relations at American Airlines and vice president of human resources at Continental Airlines before joining Lucent Technologies.

"While at Lucent, he enjoyed great success in working jointly with labor and management to overcome difficult business challenges within changing work environments," said Schwartz. "He will build on the labor-management partnership we have already begun by bringing a more strategic approach to labor relations and work to raise our efforts in best practices to an even higher collaborative level."

Schwartz added: "We've had the opportunity to brief the union leadership on the appointment of Ralph. Their reaction was very positive and they expressed continued enthusiasm for the partnership we have begun."

Other HR news

In his letter, Schwartz also announced that Katherine ("Kitty") Matzkin, director of compensation and client support, plans to retire May 1, 2007.

"Over the next year, she will be assisting me in a smooth transition of her responsibilities and will provide support to the University with a number of special projects," said Schwartz. "Kitty's experience, skill and individual talents have enabled her to make unique and valuable contributions in many University endeavors. By freeing her to devote her remaining year to special projects, the department plans to capitalize on her knowledge and experience in many areas to maximize her contributions prior to retirement."

Donna Cable, director of human resources, will assume responsibility for client support and the HR generalists, announced Schwartz. "Donna, who will be completing her law degree next month, brings considerable depth of knowledge and experience to this area of human resources." The new roles and responsibilities for Matzkin and Cable also were effective May 1.

Schwartz also announced that, with the completion of her doctoral program this summer, Laura Freebairn-Smith will resign her role as director of organizational development at the end of July "to pursue new challenges and continue her work on a Medical School asthma research grant."

He added: "I want to take this opportunity to thank Laura for her service and the significant contributions she has made to Yale University throughout her time with Human Resources. She has been an important influence not just in the human resources function, but the University as a whole."

Debbie Stanley-McAulay, director of the Learning Center, will take on an expanded role, announced Schwartz, with responsibility for both the Learning Center and organizational development. Her new responsibilities will become effective Aug. 1.
