In a new venture to support emerging playwrights, the Yale University Press and the Yale Repertory Theatre have joined forces to establish a major new playwriting competition, The Yale Drama Series.
The winner of the annual competition will be awarded the David C. Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of his or her manuscript by the Yale Press, and a staged reading at the Yale Rep. In addition, the Yale Rep may exercise its right to option the play for professional production. The Yale Drama Series and David C. Horn Prize are funded by generous support from the David Charles Horn Foundation.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee will serve as the first judge of The Yale Drama Series. During his two-year appointment, he will select the winners for the 2006 and 2007 competitions. Future judges of the series will include both distinguished playwrights and directors.
The competition is open to any citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. There is no age limit, but contestants must not have previously published a full-length play in book form, and plays submitted must not have been previously produced. Contestants can win the prize only once. Only full-length plays are eligible; musicals and children's plays will not be considered. Complete rules governing the competition can be found at www.yalebooks.com.
