The individuals who gathered around the table in the Corporation Room of Woodbridge Hall on April 21 included the top-ranking officials from the People's Republic of China and Yale University.
Seated at the head of the table were Chinese President Hu Jintao and Yale President Richard C. Levin, flanked by their wives, Liu Yongqing and Jane Levin, respectively.
In addition to Hu, the Chinese delegation State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan; Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing; Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission Ma Kai; Minister of Education Zhou Ji; Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai; Head of the Policy Planning Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCCPC) Wang Huning; Deputy Head of the CCCPC General Office Ling Jihua; Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong and his wife, Xie Shumin; Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi; and Head of President Hu Jintao's Office Chen Shiju.
Levin was joined at the ceremony by the Yale officers: Vice President and Provost Andrew Hamilton; Vice President and Secretary Linda Koch Lorimer; Vice President and General Counsel Dorothy Robinson; Vice President and Director of the Office of New Haven and State Affairs and Community Development Bruce Alexander; Vice President and Director of Development Inge Reichenbach; and Vice President and Director of Finance and Administration Shauna King. Also representing the University were Yale Corporation Senior Fellow Roland Betts; Yale Center for the Study of Globalization Director and former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo; China Law Center Director Paul Gewirtz; Yale Center for International and Area Studies Director Ian Shapiro; and Professor and Vice Chair of Genetics Tian Xu.
Also on hand were U.S. Ambassador to China Clark T. Randt '68 B.A.; Under Secretary to the United Nations Joseph Verner Reed '61 B.A.; Chief of Protocol at the U.S. State Department Donald B. Ensenat '68 B.A.; Professor and Director of Global Leadership at Tsinghua University in Beijing John Thornton '80 M.P.P.M.; and Honorary Vice Chair and Director Emeritus of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations Maurice "Hank" Greenberg.
