Two distinguished violinists, Ani Kavafian and Hyo Kang, will join the faculty of the School of Music.
Kavafian, who is currently on the School of Music faculty as an interim lecturer, has been named professor (adjunct) of violin. Kang, who teaches at the Juilliard School, will be a visiting professor at Yale.
Ani Kavafian
A soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, Kavafian has performed with most of America's leading orchestras. Her numerous solo recital engagements include performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, as well as in venues across the country.
In recent years, Kavafian has premiered and recorded a number of new works written for her. These include Henri Lazarof's "Divertimento for Violin and String Orchestra" with the Seattle Symphony; Todd Machover's concerto "Forever and Ever" for computerized violin and orchestra with the Boston Modern; and Michelle Ekizian's "Red Harvest" with the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
Kavafian -- who is also on the faculty of Stony Brook University and plays the 1736 Muir McKenzie Stradivarius violin -- has appeared and recorded widely with her sister, violinist and violist Ida Kavafian. They will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their first performance at Carnegie Hall in the fall of 2008.
Kavafian is an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York and a member of the Trio da Salo with violist Barbara Wesphal and cellist Gustav Rivinius. Recently, she has joined with clarinetist David Shifrin and pianist Andre-Michel Schub, and will be performing as violinist and violist with them. Along with cellist Carter Brey, she is the artistic director of the New Jersey chamber music series "Mostly Music."
Kavafian's list of prestigious awards includes the Avery Fisher Prize and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She has appeared at the White House on three separate occasions and has been featured on many network and PBS television music specials. Her recordings can be heard on the Nonesuch, RCA, Columbia, Arabesque, Delos and Kleos Classics labels.
Hyo Kang
The artistic director of the International Sejong Soloists, Kang made numerous concert tours in the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and Central America as both a violin soloist and chamber musician. As a member of the acclaimed Theatre Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for more than 20 years, he has given many works their American premieres and enjoyed musical collaborations with such artists as Leon Fleisher, Pina Carmirelli, Walter Trampler and André Watts.
Kang, a world-renowned violin teacher, has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1978 and has given master classes in the United States, Korea and Japan. He has also been on the faculties of the Aspen Music School in Colorado since 1978 and the Nagano Aspen Music Festival in Japan since 1994. His former students include Gil Shaham, Sarah Chang and Chee-Yun, among many others.
A native of Korea, Kang was recently the subject of a Korean Broadcasting System documentary titled "Teaching Genius -- Juilliard Professor, Hyo Kang." The governor of Gangwon province asked Kang to bring the first international music festival to PyeongChang and appointed him as the music director in March 2003.
