Jaroslav Pelikan, noted scholar of Christianity, dies
At press time, the Yale Bulletin & Calendar had just learned of the death of Jaroslav Pelikan, Sterling Professor of History Emeritus and one of the foremost scholars of the history of Christianity.
Pelikan, 82, died on May 13 at his home in Hamden, according to a death notice in the New Haven Register.
Born Dec. 17, 1923 in Akron, Ohio, Pelikan came to Yale in 1962. He served as dean of the Graduate School from 1973 to 1978.
The historian authored more than 30 books, including his most well-known, "The Christian Tradition." He translated and edited the works of Martin Luther in 22 volumes. He was honored with numerous awards during his career, including an invitation in 1983 by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the 12th annual Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities. In 2004 he was awarded the John W. Kluge Prize in the Human Sciences, and at the age of 80, he was chosen by the Annenberg Foundation to be the scholarly director for the "Institutions of Democracy" project. Pelikan served as president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 1994-1997.
The Yale Bulletin & Calendar will pay further tribute to Pelikan in its June 9 issue.
